Alt-J are a band that we've followed closely over the last year as they've slowly morphed into a monster. This month saw their debut album, An Awesome Wave, released to critical acclaim across the board. Is it too soon to predict a Mercury Nomination?? The album is a modern-day masterpiece, rich with intelligent lyrics, complex song-writing and its dark undertone. It's concise too, all the best albums are. Interspersed with short interludes that lace the album together, it is well thought out and delicately constructed.
But what are they like live? Turns out, just as compelling as on record. We brought them into the studio for a live session where they performed two tracks for us, album track, Something Good (above) and Tessellate (below). Live, the band demand your attention and focus, building tension with Joe Newman's voice even more emotional than on record.
The rest of their summer will be spent out on the road, finishing off their current tour and hitting a number of festivals including Latitude, Bestival and Pukkelpop. We strongly suggest you make time to see them.
The band's debut album, An Awesome Wave is out now on Infectious Records.
