TUNE Million Square - Pallas
Million Square are an exciting young London-based electronic duo featuring double-bassist Max Luthert and saxophonist Duncan Eagles, who citing influences as diverse as Autechre and John Coltrane, expertly blend the sounds of acoustic and electronic instruments.
Their new single ‘Pallas’ is taken from their forthcoming EP Spirit Bloom due for release on April 3rd 2020. Utilising modular synthesisers, triggers and live manipulation of acoustic sounds, ‘Pallas’ is a glorious glitchy soundscape which features as the back-drop for Eagle’s soaring tenor saxophone, as it weaves in and out of the electronic kalediscope created by the duo. Max from the band continues, “Pallas was the first piece where the majority of sounds were created in the eurorack. I wanted to write a tune with a military-march feel so I programmed the drums first and then added the layers using oscillators and other sound generators in the eurorack. I fleshed the piece out with soft synths, with the aim of creating a strong and tense vibe.”
As one of the premiere bassists of his generation in the UK, Max Luthert is already becoming well-known for his distinctive bass sound and approach to improvisation. Over the past couple of years Max has been performing around the world with artists such as Zara McFarlane, Moses Boyd, Ralph Wyld and Gabriel Zuker.
Duncan Eagles has been described as one of the most exciting tenor saxophonists (Marlbank) to recently appear on the UK scene and has also been performing internationally with Melt Yourself Down, Shabaka Hutchings, Gary Husband & Zara McFarlane.
You can catch Million Square performing live at their EP Launch show on
