TUNE Million Square - First Block
“Million Square are a band I am particularly excited about. Led by two masterful and eclectic musicians they are on the fringe of electronic and acoustic brilliance. “ Moses Boyd
Million Square are an exciting young London-based electronic duo featuring double-bassist Max Luthert and saxophonist Duncan Eagles, who citing influences as diverse as Autechre and John Coltrane, expertly blend the sounds of acoustic and electronic instruments.
Their new single ‘First Block’ is taken from their forthcoming EP Spirit Bloom which is out now. Max from the band continues, “I wanted this piece to have a tense, quick and high energy feel without overwhelming the listener. The to-and-fro of sections after the first melody was to illicit a feeling of uncertainty that is then resolved in the following section. The conclusion of the piece is a continuation of the fast paced theme of the song but juxtaposed with a languid saxophone solo and synth pads to give the impression of underlying tension.”
As one of the premiere bassists of his generation in the UK, Max Luthert is already becoming well-known for his distinctive bass sound and approach to improvisation. Over the past couple of years Max has been performing around the world with artists such as Zara McFarlane, Moses Boyd, Ralph Wyld and Gabriel Zuker.
Duncan Eagles has been described as one of the most exciting tenor saxophonists (Marlbank) to recently appear on the UK scene and has also been performing internationally with Melt Yourself Down, Shabaka Hutchings, Gary Husband & Zara McFarlane.
