Craig Hansen’s as yet unreleased!! debut album ‘Open Up’ has all the elements of a future classic.
With the musical DNA in his blood of legendary artists like The Beatles, Bowie, T-Rex, The Stone Roses, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Byrds, The Stones, The Smiths, Burt Bacarach, Simon and Garfunkel, The Sex Pistols and the Clash, ‘Open Up’ is an album of musical and lyrical intensity, excitement and passion with a rich tapestry of layered harmonies that pull no punches and say what needs to be said.
Sydney-based Craig grew up on a healthy diet of classic albums, with early guitar inspiration from Johnny Marr, and he has been subconsciously working on his debut album since first picking up an instrument at age 10.
As guitarist/co-songwriter in Brisbane-based band Wired, Craig chased his dream with that band all the way to the UK, where they received serious interest from UK labels.
Only mind-numbing factory jobs, poverty and overstayed visas saw the band implode on itself just as it was really hitting its stride. Just another rock band sob story, but not one to kill off the passion.
A crash course of soul searching and living life's ups and downs followed, then in a moment of clarity Craig thought 'I've got the tunes - f*%k this, I'll do my own album!'
Sourcing that elusive element, the one that makes bands stand out from the crowd, saw Craig trawling his way through YouTube. There he found exactly what he was looking for in Japanese resident Keigo Endo, a phenomenally talented drummer (and one of the worlds greatest people!) with near cult status on the internet (www.youtube.com/detaramei).
Keigo threw his hat in the ring immediately after hearing some of the demos.
Sean Carey (ex Thirsty Merc lead guitarist and now studio engineer/producer) met with Craig after three of these early demos reached the top 10 of Triple J's unearthed chart. He convinced Craig that he had plenty of material and should record the album at Camperdown's Trackdown Studios.
After enlisting long-time friend Adam Griffiths to play bass, all was set in place when five days before the session Craig broke several bones in his right foot when he got run over by a drug trafficker's car whilst doing his day job as a news cameraman.
The recording was to go ahead regardless! Equipped with a bag of songs, one of the world’s best drummers sleeping on the couch and a set of crutches, a round-the-clock eight day studio booking turned out 'Open Up'.
A future classic? or at very least a really cool album!
