TUNE RAS - Boogie
Taking cues from Greek, Turkish and Arabic music; Berlin based trio RAS balance their sound between DIY psychedelic soul, Mediterranean disco and dub-friendly bass with a natural affinity for globally appreciative funk.
Formed of Dekel Adin, Eden Leshem, and Guy Gefen, who all play multiple instruments and produce, RAS are based in Berlin, far from their childhood homes in rural Israel. They came together as RAS in 2018 having been friends for many years and playing with various bands.
If you flicked through their personal music collections you might find records by Sly Stone, The Rah Band, Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Mini Ripperton through to Dam Funk, Kadjah Bonet, Solange, Mndsgn, and Henry Wu. You’d also see a wealth of albums by Greek, Turkish, Arabic and African musicians, along with a lot of disco. This deep appreciation of global sounds that cross common ley lines, pours a melting pot of influences into the RAS musical brew.
Armed with vintage drum machines, guitars, synths, bongos and a Tascam Portastudio 424 tape machine; they quietly released an eponymous debut album under the radar in early 2019. The album was conceived and recorded in Dekel’s Berlin bedroom in little over a week. This spontaneous creativity is core to RAS’s output; a new batch of tracks that will be released throughout 2020 were similarly produced in a few days of non-stop recording in South Africa.
