Gardienne is Kansas City-based artist Alyssa DeGraff, who has hit the ground running with her first single 'The Garden' (which is more rock than you'd expect from this once-quiet girl-next-door.)
Her debut release "Walking Trees" features an indie artist's dream team; impeccable guitar tones and overall production by Josh Scott (JHS pedals,) the string-quartet stylings of Jeremy Larson (Sucre, Sleeping at Last) and a mix crafted by Chad Howat (Paper Route, Brooke Waggoner, Kye Kye.)
Raised in California, DeGraff was heavily influenced by her father's huge collection of cassettes. Bands like The Beatles, Peter Gabriel and Tears for Fears were her introduction to a world of pop music at its strangest. She began to compose her own music and saw that people were moved and impacted by even the most personal of her songs.
In 2007, Alyssa experienced a traumatic vocal cord injury that warranted multiple surgeries. Doctors were hesitant to say whether she would be able to sing again. Persevering through months of complete vocal rest and several years of actual recovery, Alyssa never gave up on her dream to write powerful music.
After relocating to Kansas City for school, Alyssa befriended Josh Scott. With his newly-built recording studio, her catalog of well-written songs and their shared love for 90's rock music, they set out to record the 'Walking Trees' EP.
Scott says, "I first heard one of Alyssa's songs and was shocked that such a fresh and creative writer was right here in Kansas City! Not only does she write fantastic songs full of life and energy, she writes from a place that is real and from such diverse places stylistically that somehow all fit together. The Walking Trees project was one of the funnest records I have ever had the privilege of working on."
With Josh Scott's production oversight and his arsenal of vintage gear at HiFi Records, DeGraff worked with a team of musicians to develop a sound that is incredibly diverse, yet unified by her emotive vocals. With a live rock band vibe, the EP soundscapes have moments reminiscent of Radiohead's 'The Bends' era, The Cranberries and Eisley. On three of the five songs, the huge electrics and Wurly are joined by real strings, courtesy of Jeremy Larson, that move the music's softer moments from whimsical to unexpectedly grand.
