TUNE Handstand Parade - Pushing Up The Daisies
“Pushing up Daisies” is the second single from Handstand Parade’s second EP “Who Loves You Now” Produced at RYP Recordings by Michael Smith (Wolf Alice, Bess Atwell, Kid Wave, Honey Lung, Weird Milk). Picking up from where “Draped In Gold” left off “Pushing Up Daisies” was birthed from the ashes of nostalgia, touching on the feelings of regret, loss, longing and resignation all tied up in a neat Alternative-Pop bow.
It was important for the band to create two opposing tones in the song; you have the lyrics which tell a sad and lonely story sung sorrowfully by Lead Singer Shaquille Howe completely put at odds with the Music created by the rest of the band. There is a feel of finality to the lyrics, the song was written in retrospect and that shines through.
Synthesisers rise and fall thought the song, a resonating bass line played by Andrew Langdon solidly provides the heart of the song. Guitars played by Josh Ward and Shaquille Howe slide perfectly in and out, giving the record space to breathe in the more tender parts of the song until its grand entrance at its climax. The drums played by Matt De La Harpe dictates the whole show and provides the pop throughout the record. This song is built to dance to it has all the hallmarks of a Pop track but the feel of a sad old love song.
Off the back of shows at The Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City and a UK Tour “Pushing up Daisies” helps to portray the overall story of “Who Loves You Now” and helps show the musical diversity of the band. The Ep was written with a big focus on the future, the losses, the wins, the words we can never take back and the lessons we learn
