TUNE Ellis May - Surrender
Ellis May is the solo project of Danish composer Sophia Maj. Her background in sound design for films has inspired her to produce eerie, pulsing tracks, which evoke creatures of the night. With a foundation in house and techno new single “Surrender" is all unrelenting bass and twisted electronics with her ghostly vocal parts channelling the likes of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons and PJ Harvey.
The track travels through light and shadow; a menacing lament that encapsulates the duality of love and frustrations that come with the birth of a newborn:
"I finished Surrender a few months after my sons birth. I was stressed about not maintaining my identity as a musician, and only having time to care for my child and family - I could stop being “myself” but not stop doing what I do.
The first time we looked into the eyes of our newborn, I could do nothing but surrender myself to the love, to the family, to making room for the undefined and the stuff that can´t be promised - I lost the tight grasp of myself in it all. I believe its the thing one has to do when becoming a parent. The ultimate surrender for me was becoming a unified entity with the people I want in my life.
I decided that I need music in my life and I have to make room for it, and put in the effort for it to become something bigger than just an identity for myself. It needs to be a true contribution. Something undefined. Something uncontrolled. Something I can lose. Something shared I can enjoy with other."
The new single follows her debut “Old Love”, a track described by The Line Of Best Fit as “reframing the ancient and sepia-toned via an expansive digital world.”
The debut Ellis May EP is due early 2018 alongside a to-be-announced London show.
