Part of the thriving Norwich folk scene, James often draws comparison with classic English songwriters such as Nick Drake and John Martyn, as well as contemporaries such as Ben Howard and Damien Rice. His intimate, left-handed guitar picking and dreamlike, pastoral lyrics are quintessentially English and reliably cast a hushed spell over chattering audiences. In the studio, elements of electronica, distortion and sampled sounds are added to his quiet folk to create something all together more modern.
James is a graduate of the British Academy of New Music (alongside Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora, The Saturdays). His new EP includes the visceral anthem ‘Rolling Thunder’ as produced by legendary record producer Clive Langer (David Bowie, Elvis Costello, David Byrne) and the dreamlike title track and lead single ‘Nameless’, featuring the haunting harmonies of London songwriter Carmody. The single was chosen as one of BBC 6Music Tom Robinson’s picks of the week (Fresh Faves) and remixed by popular Russian DJ Loolacoma.
Born in Northampton and now living in East Anglia, James honed his craft at campfires and small acoustic cafes over many years, eventually stepping up to headline shows at Norwich Arts Centre in his hometown. In 2012 he toured with festival café Coyote Moon, playing each day to audiences large and small at festivals across the country. That year, his sound was noticed by Secret Garden Party founder, Fred Fellowes, who invited him to play on the main acoustic stage of the festival before Newton Faulkner and Lianne La Havas. Since then, he has done shows with Tiny Ruins, Sam Brookes, Carrie Tree, Wille and the Bandits and many others.
James’ songs embrace alternative culture, nature wisdom and all kinds of soul food.
