Once upon a time, in a far away land (called DorchVegas), a nifty producer invited a nifty little vocalist into the archetypal bedroom studio, and there; my friends, is where the story began!
Flowers and clouds now slowly disperse……….
The music of Moontown comes from a variety of different sources, some obvious some not so obvious and a couple you wouldn’t expect at all.
While a youngster, vocalist Emma Friendship took to recording her own compositions on a plastic Casio and toy tape recorder lost in a world of George Michael, Golden Earring and Fleetwood Mac. It was this elusive and youthful energy that led Emma down the path of adventure and under the influence of producer and writer Toby Kilburn who zapped Emma’s tunes with David Bowie, soul music and the finest Cat there is; Mr Stevens!
This rich mix of disparate and ethereal elements seemed to make sense when the wah-wah funk guitar of Giles Watts was added and thus the eclectic electro clash of modern synth beats and classic influences gave rise to MOONTOWN.
While setting up their own club called, ‘Retrogression’ in their hometown of Dorchester, they quickly realised that they were creating a scene for themselves. This was a chance for locals to come along and listen to the sparkle-pop-tastic spectacle that has been described as an ‘indie-Kylie’ but as you listen to their soon to be released debut EP you can hear Santogold, Little Boots and Lady Ga Ga. But there are some classic old school Human League and Erasure touches that are as subtle and elusive as the shade of the midnight moon, and the tunes begin to take on a luscious and luxurious texture which will make you want to hear them again. The songs hint at fantastic things to come-moonscapes to be discovered and pop charts to dominate!
With songs like, ‘More Money Than Sense’, ‘Knuckle Down’ and ‘Help Me To Speak’ the distinctive whispered edginess of Emma’s voice entices the listener and reveals all sorts of cool soulful colours, textures and tones.
The world of MOONTOWN is bright shiny electric pop but with songs, soul and the instantly memorable voice of Emma Friendship.
