TUNE SK Shlomo - The First Time
In his new guise, the former beatboxing champ SK Shlomo is baring his soul...
The First Time, premiered in iDJ magazine and described by Gaby Roslin as “So haunting… it’s beautiful” on her BBC radio show, is the new single from the man formerly known as champion beatboxer Shlomo.
Following a battle with depression and PTSD, the "beatboxer turned electronic singer-songwriter" – as he's described in The Times – has taken to working under a new alias (his real name is Simon Shlomo Khan) and recorded his debut album Surrender, which is currently available for pre-order via Pledgemusic. Cataloguing his mental health journey lyrically and drawing on the likes of Massive Attack, Caribou, Jamie xx and James Blake as musical influences, he describes the album as "soulful electro".
Describing his rebirth as a singer, he says: "I had to stop doing some crazy shit with my tongue! But when I relaxed, a key unlocked and my voice totally changed. In the past, I was always straining, trying to sing high and powerful. Suddenly it was soft, low and gentle, which is how I speak."
The First Time is the second single taken from the forthcoming album. See what you think...
