The self-titled debut full-length album from acclaimed sisters Lily & Madeleine will be released 28 October on Asthmatic Kitty Records. In advance of the record here’s a sneak peek at the second track “Devil We Know”.
Precocious teenage talent is less of a rare commodity nowadays, but in January 2013, Lily and Madeleine’s EP debut, The Weight Of The Globe, announced something exceptional: two sisters, Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz, aged 18 and 16, their exquisite voices dovetailing in the best tradition of singing siblings, and with a nous for melody that elevated them above most of the competition. Sufjan Stevens sanctioned the EP’s release on his label imprint Asthmatic Kitty, and now comes the debut album, Lily And Madeleine, whose ten tracks consolidate and expand the sisters’ folk-pop-centric beauty, rich narratives and alluring presence.
Born and raised in Indianapolis, the sisters originally gained notice when the acoustic video for their song “In the Middle” was featured on the homepage at Reddit. To date, the video has been viewed over 280,000 times. A complete series of acoustic videos can be viewed at the duo’s YouTube page.
Their debut EP The Weight of the Globe received critical acclaim from the likes of Clash who called it "Almost perfectly beautiful, Lily & Madeleine have that seductive sensibility which can only shatter our soul" and Vogue.com commented that; “This isn’t the first time we’ve become enrapt with two sisters harmonizing, but it’s a bell we never tire of hearing ring.”
The album was recorded in just two weeks at the Bloomington studio Farm Fresh and produced by Paul Mahern and was written by the sisters and longtime collaborator Kenny Childers (Gentleman Caller). Sometimes a band kicks in behind the girls; other times they accompany themselves, with a sparse and delicate sound that’s both emotional and pristine.
Lily And Madeleine also rings in some changes. “Sad isn’t bad, but if we only sang about sad stuff, it would be boring,” Madeleine claims. “We wanted something different, so the album’s more upbeat, in mood and lyrics. We’re talking less about uncertainty and more about the adventure and the possibilities of the future.”
