Awe (Phaeleh Remix) Appearing online in April, Roger Goula’s elegiac Awe – taken from his forthcoming Overview Effect album - signalled the arrival of a serious new talent in the sphere of modern classical/ electronic music. A four track 12” EP Something About Silence released on July 29th via new imprint Cognitive Shift Recordings, serves as the perfect primer for the long-player (expected November) and features Awe and the title track complemented with remixes from Phaeleh and Christian Löffler. Goula plays a special DJ set at Amoeba Music in Los Angeles on 21st June before playing his first ever UK shows this July Wednesday 20th – Foyles Book Shop, Charing Cross Road Thursday 28th – Servants Jazz Quarters, Bradbury Street, Dalston The ‘overview effect’ is the term used to describe the cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts and cosmonauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from orbit. “Awe represents that unique and overwhelming feeling that comes from looking into the unknown, into the physical and psychological universes still to explore,” says Goula. “It is about a desire to explore beyond our understanding.” Meanwhile Something About Silence “..tells the story of the return to earth with a completely new perspective on life. Silence is the only companion of this intimate journey back. It’s a quiet inner reflexion on what we have become.” The remixes from Christian Löffler and Phaeleh capture and transform the ideas of these pieces, bringing a complete new sound and perspective to the concept of each piece. Cognitive Shift Recordings is a new Contemporary Classical label, born out of a collaboration between One Little Indian Records, home to artists including Björk & Olga Bell and Manners McDade Music Publishing, home to artists such as Nils Frahm and Throwing Snow, Cognitive Shift Recordings creates a new home for contemporary classical music that has influences and instrumentation within the genre and beyond.
