TUNE Girlhood - Bad Decisions
“We're keeping an eye on Girlhood for the rest of 2017. And you should do the same!” - Complex UK
“Girlhood are very much in a league of their own with their effortlessly nostalgic, yet current sound.” - The Line Of Best Fit
“Totally addictive, an endearingly ramshackle dance pop jammer that recalls those early ESG cuts yet re-cast in an English light.” - Clash
London based duo Girlhood are back with a brand new slice of uplifting, glitched out soul in the form of new single ‘Bad Decisions’. The band have graced the cover of last month’s London In Stereo and have also confirmed details of their first ever live show in anticipation of their debut EP (which is also expected later this year).
Over a mid-tempo beat, ‘Bad Decisions’ sees vocalist Tessa Cavanna lament reckless late night choices over an instrumental punctuated with reverberated piano stabs and fingerpicked guitars. The chorus flips the track on its head however, with Cavanna switching to an almost hymn-like falsetto tone, bringing ‘Bad Decisions’ to its emotional crescendo before a chopped vocal sample floats over glitched electronic sounds for one of the group’s most sonically sophisticated tracks yet.
Of the track, the band say: “Bad Decisions are often made with the best intentions, glasses smash and plans get broke. You can stick things back together or you can walk away from the pieces.”
Cementing their status as one of the UK’s most imaginative prospects, Girlhood’s star is in full ascent. A London duo consisting of Christian Pinchbeck and Tessa Cavanna, Tessa – who was raised in Kenya - began writing with Christian when their separate musical projects came to an end, with the pair drawing inspiration from the shared sounds on which they grew up. Taking cues from Fugees, late 80s hip hop and The Avalanches, the group use Christian’s narrowboat - still docked on a London canal - to write, record and produce their music, bringing a distinctly British setting to their worldly and diverse range of influences. With the release of Girlhood’s debut EP expected later this year, now’s the perfect time to get acquainted with an act that has so many excited at such an early stage in their career.
