Saul Ashby is set to release his debut single Debutantes, on 14th May 2012 through Fly Records – the first offering from the newly-resurrected cult label, which launched the career of a young Marc Bolan some forty years previously. ‘Debutantes’ will be preceded by a series of UK tour dates in conjunction with Communion. Raised in London and refined in the States, Saul secured a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Having spent three years there studying to be a jazz drummer, upon graduation he left Boston intent on finding a different type of musical vocation in New York. There, Ashby truly came into his own as a songwriter. He started pitching tracks to other artists, whilst struggling as a session drummer. New songs were ‘road-tested’ on the subway of 14th street: “I’d busk there to make ends meet, playing choruses on repeat in that short window where people would pass me.” Back in London and primed to release his first single, Saul Ashby has found himself exactly where he wants to be. ‘Debutantes’ is a vibrant, contemporary twist on the classic guitar-stomp of Elvis Costello, or Orange Juice front-man Edywn Collins.
