TUNE Anthony Joseph - On The Move
"On the Move” - The lyrics are random, based on the idea that in the Caribbean, sensation is so heightened that everything seems to happen at the same time, like synchronicity. This is why there is no narrative to the lyrics, ideas and images are occurring quickly and almost on top of each other. I’m travelling between the south of France and Trinidad here…flying all over!” - Anthony Joseph
‘On The Move’ is the first single from Anthony Joseph’s forthcoming long player, ‘People Of The Sun’.
Here we have a somewhat chaotic yet seamlessly conscious spat over heavy percussion and loud brass -- everything performed with pinpoint accuracy that really encaptures the Island atmosphere. Lyrical topics covered include the weather, freedom, food, the ocean and human life, adding further grit to these candid vocal acrobatics.
Anthony Joseph - poet, teacher, musician, and writer - has made major contributions to contemporary British literature and holds a PhD in Creative Writing from London Goldsmiths College.
A bonafide Windrusher, having arrived in the UK at a young age from Trinidad, he has had five books published and continues to write. Being labeled a writer of ‘future classic fiction’ must be no easy weight to carry, yet here we find him easily bearing this load and continuing to create art of great beauty as he gears up to release his seventh studio album.
The new record builds on a deep musical catalogue including six full LPs, which include albums with The Spasm Band (Kindred Spirits) right up to 2016’s offering ‘Caribbean Roots’ (Strut / Heavenly Sweetness).
Anthony Joseph will play a headline show at London’s Barbican Centre on 17th November for Windrush: A Celebration (a bill that also includes, amongst others, Manu Chao’s recent favourite songstress Calypso Rose), part of London Jazz Festival.
