‘Sounds like Blondie fronting The Smiths’ (Designer Magazine)
Sandbox’s feisty lead singer/guitarist Lennie is a relative of non other than singing legend Bing Crosby. “Not everyone believes me at first to be honest. They take some convincing, but to be fair, it’s a bit of a far fetched connection to make up!”
Being described as “Blondie fronting The Smiths” by Designer Magazine, sandbox have rapidly gained a reputation as one of the best live acts in Manchester since releasing their third ep, ‘Back to the City, 18 months ago.
When asked what she thinks Uncle Bing would make of sandbox’s music, Lennie say’s “it might not be the style of music that he made, but he had an ear for a good melody and I’m sure he’d appreciate that in our music. At the end of the day, a catchy melody that you can sing along to on the bus on your way to work is what makes a great song.”
Despite being on the radar in Manchester for the last 3 years, Sandbox feel they can use that to their advantage. “I think the important thing is to stick to what you believe in,” Lennie says, “ there are so many bands that are constantly changing their sound to fit in with what is classed as ‘popular’. We’ve just stuck to what we love writing and playing, and it’s worked in our favour. Rather than getting signed after playing just a handful of gigs, we’ve used the last few years to play to people and gain a strong fan base and a reputation for being a good live band.”
So, what’s next? More gigs no doubt… And a festive duet round the piano with David Bowie… Maybe
"sandbox have a Telecaster wielding minx at the front who can sing and play whilst still looking amazing. At a time when there seems to be an influx of bands with exciting sticks men (Arctics/Bloc Party et al), Sandbox have a ‘Matt Helders’ in the making in the shape of their phenomenal drummer. CATCH THEM NOW!" (This is Music Fanzine)
