TUNE THE PORTRAITS - For Our Times (single)
‘For Our Times’ is a mournful snapshot of the divided U.K. as we leave the E.U..
In this era where governments see truth as overrated and experts as passé, like many others around them, The Portraits’ songwriters have felt the pain of recent times very intensely. It has been a deeply troubling period, with disturbed sleep, frightening dreams and an enduring sense of unease about where we’re heading...the feeling of a giant hammer hanging over us waiting to strike.
And yet in the UK our pain is self-inflicted. This country is losing a war that it declared on itself. We didn’t need to hold a referendum about the E.U., but the very fact of doing so has led to the deepest chasm opening up down the centre of the country. To turn the TV on, and see such anger and venom from one half of the population towards the other has been undoubtedly one of the most terrifying and upsetting experiences of all our lives.
The Portraits’ new single, featuring a beautiful flute performance from young Somerset flautist Sam Jordan, questions what it really means to be British today. It is a painful search for identity, for where we belong as individuals within the borders of a nation, and where the nation belongs in the wider world.
