New York City trio STRNGRS (pronounced 'strangers') creates a gun-slinging ruckus without abandoning their love for ass-shaking pop music and classic story-telling. Just as delicate as they are brash, these enigmatic New Yorkers have taken the city by storm and emerged as one of the scene's most recognized new bands. Comprising singer/multi-instrumentalist Carson Kelley, guitarist Garrett Drinon, and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Chase McGowan, the 3-piece formed in 2013 when Drinon and McGowan, long time friends, met Kelley at a honky tonk bar in Brooklyn. Originally from southern Missouri and new to New York on a modeling contract, Kelley was already looking to form a band. When the three ventured back to Drinon and McGowan's practice space, instant songwriting ensued. Within just a few months, a handful of these songs were recorded.
One of these tunes, 'Subtle Reminder,' shot to #1 on UK's Amazing Radio chart, remained on the chart for 8 weeks, and was later ranked #8 on Amazing Radio's Top 100 chart of 2013, sharing the top 10 with the likes of HAIM and London Grammar. STRNGRS set out playing NYC's best small clubs, garnering crowds at venues such as Mercury Lounge and Brooklyn Bowl. Meanwhile, they were commissioned to cover a Radiohead song for an official compilation released by Bandhouse Records in the UK. They recorded a version of 'The National Anthem,' and this experiment marked an evolution in the band's sound and opened them up to a more atmospheric realm, which is now implemented in some of their compositions. By the end of their first year as a band, STRNGRS was named a "Top 3 Performer of CMJ 2013" by Seen Heard Known (NYC), a "Top New Artist of 2013" by the Rollo & Grady Music Blog, and had three songs named to Rollo & Grady's "Top 100 Songs of 2013." In 2014, their single 'Outta My Mind' appeared in the Guy's Choice Awards show on Spike TV and was featured in Teton Gravity Research's movie Almost Ablaze.
Since it's genesis, STRNGRS has shared the stage with The Hold Steady, Deer Tick, J Roddy Walston & The Business, JEFF the Brotherhood, The Felice Brothers, Mobb Deep, Little Hurricane, and The Wans at multiple festivals and shows, including CMJ, SXSW, Hookfest, CBGB Fest, It's A Schoolnight (KCRW) and Sneakers & Speakers. In August of 2014, following a month long residency at Pianos in NYC, the group played sole support for a sold out show with Reignwolf at Bowery Ballroom. They look forward to expanding on their sound in 2015 and when asked about this, Drinon replies, "We seem to have begun in a very primitive musical place, stripped down and simple. We look forward to expanding on this approach, incorporating more of our favorite influences and instruments to create more textural, hypnotic and acoustic sounds...in addition to the straight forward, explosive thing that we've been doing so far."
STRNGRS has operated completely independently to date.
