Parakeet formed earlier this year from the long-standing friendship of Yuck's Mariko Doi and The History of Apple Pie's James Thomas. Add to them the bracing guitars of Jon Jackson and we arrive at the incendiary trio that Parakeet comprises today. The band unabashedly delve into darker, noisier territory than their respective origins - a territory once occupied by the likes of Babes in Toyland, Sonic Youth and early Hole.
Following one self-released single, they are ready to further showcase their "bruising grunge pop" (The Fly) in the six track "Shonen Hearts" EP. Self-produced and recorded at home in Mariko's flat, the EP will be available digitally and on a limited run of gold cassettes sold exclusively through Rough Trade from November 19th.
The tracks exhibit the punch that Parakeet have already become renowned for in their live shows, earning them forthcoming support slots with DIIV and The Walkmen. Mariko's rumbling bass, combined with James' forceful drums and Jon's "sky-reaching guitar licks" (FakeDIY), form the perfect backdrop for her at once compelling yet beguilingly hazy vocals. Songs like "Shonen Hearts" prove the band's pop hit prowess, with Doi's Japanese heart firmly on her sleeve in gutsier tracks like 'Darumasanga' and EP opener 'Toumono'.
The combined prior creative and live experiences of Parakeet's members have allowed them to swiftly formulate not just a fresh and heavy supply of songs, but also a captivating and visceral live performance.
