TUNE The Sick-Leaves - Run Away
Slow burning stadium rock song 'Run Away' off The Sick-Leaves third album Last Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Songwriter, Eksteen Jacobsz describes 'Run Away' and the inspiration for it.
In terms of songwriting this is in my opinion the best Sick-Leaves song yet and the one I’m the most proud of. I wrote it in basically no time, recorded the demo straight away, didn’t touch it again until we hit the studio and the demo version is basically note for note the album version. The intro has a bit of a Champagne Supernova feel to it. The simple 4 chord structure repeats itself, building all the time until it hits the end bit. The way it then just opens up gets me every time when I listen to it. It ends with a nice understated outtro which is quite weird for The Sick-Leaves.
I always tend to get a tad emotional when I hear the line “the cracks in your armour expanded/ the lights on your highways faded/ yet wave after wave couldn’t break it/ coz they could not delay/ any longer the debt you had to pay/ get stronger and stay/ or run away.” To me, that sums up life.
