TUNE Tertia May - White
White is the the new track from Tertia May, a rising talent from Surrey. Since meeting producer Subculture, Tertia has honed her sound towards a unique blend of pop, jazz and hip-hop. Unafraid to show her attitude, Tertia May is emerging as a fierce new talent.
White begins with the late-night twilight sounds of a muted trumpet, the thunk of upright bass and a soft click, suggesting late night tranquillity. This moment of peace is interrupted by digital samples: an embodiment of the experience of walking home after a long memorable night out - the early morning blissful thoughts blending with memories of the previous hours of ecstasy.
"Growing up I was always fascinated by the idea that fairytales had these villains who were pictured as powerful and manipulative. I wanted White to have this magical but quite cynical tone to it, representing love and trust within a relationship"
The track merges the worlds of soft jazz and R&B vocals to create a space to get lost in as it shifts gear into cutting-edge pop. White is constantly turning as a track, with trilling high hats clicking into the chorus, then shifting back to the luscious and languorous verses, giving White a contemporary as well as classic feel.
Beneath the cool collected vibes of the instrumentation, Tertias’ lyrics show flickers of doubt, directed towards a dishonest man and the damage he has caused. ‘I sold my soul to the devil dressed in white, a broken plane won’t fly that high’, adding further complexity to the track- suggesting the uplifting musical mood has come at a price.
White is clearly an exciting track from a rising talent, an intoxicating blend of pop bravura, soulful nuance and late-night comedown wrapped in a genre-shifting package. The single is being released by London imprint Twisted Hearts Records (DORJ, Gus Harvey, Subculture).
