Brothers Andrew and James Stone, AKA Lusts, have announced their return with new single ‘Heavy Thoughts’, their first new music since the release of acclaimed debut record ‘Illuminations'.
After releasing their acclaimed debut album Illuminations at the end of 2015, and then going on to tour across the UK and Europe for the six months that followed, the brothers had plenty of other experiences to inspire new creative work. ‘It was some pretty intense back-to-back gigging that took its toll on us’, James says. ‘I got lost in a lift in Paris for around half an hour - it was all very Kafkaesque, Andrew rented a vintage Ford Capri and crashed it in Blackpool…’ James laughs, ‘I don’t really know what happened’. It was this sense of abandonment and throwing themselves into the unknown that helped inspire the idea and philosophy of the new music they were beginning to write. ‘L’appel du vide - the call of the void’, Andrew explains, ‘it’s the feeling of looking out like when you’re high up and getting the urge to jump, not in an especially morbid way, more like a glimpse of something else, another world or impulse. We wanted to try and capture that in the music’.
You can hear this in Lusts’ new track ‘heavy thoughts’, the first insight of what is to come from the duo’s work inside their home studio over the past year. The song signals an ambitious and exciting expansion from the sounds heard across their first record, filtered through fuzz and distortion pedals, driving rhythms and an unabashedly pop heart. With lyrics partly inspired by J.G Ballard’s High Rise, Andrew speaks on the track, ‘we always want to juxtapose ideas and themes - looking for a utopia in the darkness. We wanted to create a song that simultaneously revelled in destructiveness, whilst also critiquing it. The book really shocked me as I was growing up, and continues to do so. This track is about pushing us to explore parts of ourselves and the people around us’. The track was also inspired by the immersive visuals of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker, James explaining, ‘as writers, we’re constantly drawn to how visual imagery can explain a feeling in a more honest and visceral way than a description ever could. We want to create alternative landscapes and worlds to dive into where you can lose yourself for a while’.
In 2015, Lusts announced their arrival with the instantly infectious single ‘Temptation’, winning Steve Lamacq’s Rebel Playlist with further support coming across 6 Music from Lauren Laverne and followed by acclamatory features for debut album Illuminations in the likes of The Guardian, Q Magazine and NME. Zane Lowe championed the band as ’Next Hype’ on Radio 1, where Phil Taggart also supported and Huw Stephens later premiered the album on Radio 1, with the title-track playlisted on BBC 6 Music.
After previous full UK and EU tours, as well as performances at the likes of SXSW, The Great Escape and more, Lusts have also announced brand new live dates. They are as follows:

12th - Sebright Arms, London
