Vilk Collective (formerly known as GOL) was started up by award winning musicians and filmmakers Roxana Vilk and Peter Vilk back in Edinburgh, before moving to Bristol in 2017.
For their last two albums they collaborated with musicians Yann Seznec (Keyboards/Sound Design) Allan Ferguson (Electric Bass), Aki Remally (Electric Guitar), Iordanis Kaliatzoglou (Saxes, Clarinet, Nay) Dougie Hudson (Congas) and Bouda Vosough Ahmadi on Santur.
Their fresh and funky fusion of traditional Persian arrangements, electronica, jazz and world music have spread waves of excitement from Scotland to the Middle East and USA, leading to being recorded for the BBC and busy summers of festival performances across Scotland.
They were selected to be part of the prestigious Scottish Jazz Festival Expo in 2010 & 2015 (who promote what’s exciting in Scottish jazz) and performed new material from their recent album during the Edinburgh International Jazz Festival
BBC TV has broadcast two documentaries on the band, one for their Close Up on Music series following their creative process as they recorded their new album and recording live tracks for the BBC at the Premise Studios in Hackney.
They are currently recording their new album here in Bristol.
The music video for the soon to be released track “The Remembered” just won Best Experimental Film 2019 at New Renaissance Film Festival Amsterdam.
World jazz with electronica infusions would be the best way to describe GOL who have an after-hours ambience made more interesting bythe Middle Eastern-derived scales and textures. Roxana’s vocals float seductively and the lyrics evoke transition, rootlessness and longing without descending into mournfulness.A classy set.”
